Cell Phone Directive at Dr WA MacLeod

Dr WA MacLeod provides digital resources to support student learning. This means personal electronic devices such as cell phones are not needed in our classrooms. Our goal is to create an optimal educational environment at all grade levels that maximizes student learning, safety, and positive social interactions.

Within our school we believe inappropriate cell phone use is a significant barrier to student success. Therefore, cell phone use is prohibited during instructional time.

Students in grades PP–6 will turn off and store their cell phones for the entire school day, including non-instructional times.

Students in grades 7 and 8 must store their cell phones in their lockers while at school. They can access their phones during lunch but must return them to their lockers before afternoon classes begin.

What happens when a student does not follow expectations?

1) The first time a student is found using their cell phone when not permitted they’ll be reminded and asked to turn it off and put it in their backpack. At the next class change, grade 7 and 8's will return the cell phone to their locker.

2) The second time a student is found using their cell phone when not permitted the student will be asked to take the phone to the office until the end of the day. Their parent or guardian will be notified by the classroom teacher.

3) The third time a student is found using their cell phone when not permitted the student will be referred to the office. The parent or guardian will be notified and the student may be considered insubordinate as per the Provincial Code of Conduct Policy.

If there is an emergency and you need to contact your student, please call the main office at (902)755-8450.
