Welcome to Grade 3!

It has been a busy and exciting few days in grade 3, and it was nice to see so many smiling faces walk through the school doors on Thursday. So far, we have been working on some fun back to school activities, and we have been taking the time to get to know one another. I've especially enjoyed learning more about the students through their "All about me" bags this week!

In math, we will start by reviewing Number Sense concepts from last year, including skip counting forwards and backwards by 1s, 2s, 5, and 10s. We will also revisit even and odd numbers, and look at patterns in the 100s chart. Building a strong foundation of Number Sense is important as your child prepares to extend their knowledge of numbers to 1000 this year.

In ELA, students will be reminded of how they can select a "just right" book for independent reading, and we will start to focus on specific reading strategies. By the end of the month, your child will be bringing home reading bags for nightly reading practice. Once we are settled with classroom routines and expectations with independent work, the students will be introduced to their writing folder for weekly word work and ELA center activites. Students will regularly write in their journals about their own personal experiences, and we will move towards specific writing units as the year progresses.
